The Canet en Roussillon lake has a rare and comprehensive ecosystem. It has "Natura 2000" classification status within the European ecological network which is about preserving natural habitats, the habitats of different species as well as protecting the wild open areas of birdlife.
Here’s what can be seen at the Canet lake throughout the year!
With more than 246 listed species and around 200 migrant bird species, the lake has become a unique bird watching site:
- From mid-February to Mid-August during nesting: the nesting species such as the purple heron, the Western Marsh harrier, The Black-winged stilt or the Moustached warbler.
- From February to May and from August to October: the migrants such as the Pink Flamingo, the Squacco heron or the Wood sandpiper.
- All year round: the winter visitors such as the Great egret, the Pied avocet and the Kingfisher.
During the summer:
Come and visit the permanent exhibition at the fisherman’s village (every day from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm at the reception cabin), which is all about the history of the Canet lake (fishing, fishermen…), with information about all the bird species which can be found at the site along with the diversity of the flora and the features and ecological role of the lagoons…
